How to Decide
StartMail is known for private, encrypted email with unlimited aliases and is used by privacy‑conscious individuals and businesses. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Posteo leans on 100 % green‑energy hosting; Tuta Mail is fully open‑source and uses quantum‑resistant cryptography; HEY centers on a screened inbox that requires sender approval; Mailfence bundles an integrated productivity suite (calendar, documents, contacts) and operates under Belgian jurisdiction with strong legal privacy protections.
When weighing these options, focus on (1) the encryption approach and openness – PGP‑fallback in StartMail vs quantum‑resistant open‑source crypto in Tuta Mail vs OpenPGP browser‑based encryption in Mailfence; (2) storage allowances and pricing tiers – StartMail’s 20 GB/30 GB caps versus Posteo’s expandable storage starting at 4 GB and Tuta’s 1 GB free tier; (3) platform and client support – native mobile apps in Tuta Mail versus web‑only access in StartMail and Posteo; (4) additional productivity features – integrated calendars and documents in Mailfence (and Posteo’s calendars) versus the minimalist offering of StartMail; and (5) jurisdiction and legal privacy model – Dutch/GDPR compliance for StartMail, German hosting for Posteo and Tuta, and Belgian court‑order protection for Mailfence.
