How to Decide
Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring is a paid, single‑player point‑and‑click adventure known for its meticulously recreated Victorian London and its appeal to fans of classic detective and puzzle games. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments leans on a moral decision system that alters Holmes’ reputation and story outcomes; Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective Vol. II is distinguished by its full‑motion‑video presentation and multiple solution paths that lead to different endings.
When weighing substitutes for The Silver Earring, focus on (1) pricing model – the target costs $19.99 one‑time while Crimes & Punishments sits at $59.99 and Consulting Detective is also a one‑time purchase but often found at lower legacy prices; (2) narrative branching – the target offers a linear story, Crimes & Punishments adds reputation‑based moral choices, and Consulting Detective provides multiple endings via divergent clue interpretations; (3) presentation style – hand‑drawn artwork and period sound in the target versus Crimes & Punishments’ fully voiced characters and Consulting Detective’s FMV actors; (4) puzzle and investigation depth – classic deduction and inventory puzzles in the target compared with Crimes & Punishments’ forensic analysis and lock‑picking, and Consulting Detective’s clue‑tracking through newspapers and maps; (5) platform support – the target runs only on PC, while Consulting Detective includes a native Mac version, expanding accessibility.
