How to Decide
Rainmeter is a free, open‑source desktop customization tool for Windows that power users rely on to display community‑made skins and widgets. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: DisplayFusion leans into multi‑monitor taskbars and deep window‑automation; lively is chosen for its animated WinUI 3 wallpapers and fully open‑source code.
When weighing Rainmeter against its peers, focus on (1) the licensing model – Rainmeter and lively are GPL/open‑source while DisplayFusion is proprietary with a freemium tier, (2) the core feature set – Rainmeter offers skin‑based widgets, DisplayFusion provides multi‑monitor taskbars and trigger automation, and lively delivers animated wallpapers, (3) system impact – Rainmeter and DisplayFusion have low footprints, whereas lively’s animated wallpapers can be more resource‑hungry, and (4) pricing – Rainmeter and lively are completely free, while DisplayFusion’s advanced features require a paid license.
