How to Decide
NHL 97 is known for delivering classic ice‑hockey action with authentic 1996‑97 NHL rosters and is popular among hockey enthusiasts and retro gamers. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: NHL 2002 leans on its 8‑player online multiplayer mode; NHL 2001 stands out with its Create‑a‑Player tool for detailed custom athletes; NHL 98 is distinguished by its LAN/online 8‑player matchmaking; NHL 2000 emphasizes extensive customization tools such as a custom roster editor; Pong is unique as a free, minimalist arcade experience.
When comparing these options, the key factors that actually differentiate them are: the presence and scale of online multiplayer (e.g., 8‑player support in NHL 2002, 2001, 98, 2000 versus none in NHL 97 and Pong); the depth of customization tools like roster editors and season management (deep in NHL 2000 and NHL 98, modest in NHL 97); whether the game offers dedicated player‑creation features such as Create‑a‑Player (NHL 2001 only); and the pricing model, since all EA titles are paid one‑time purchases while Pong is free.
